Delicately Priced Pasta

I was at a local grocery store the other day that in my my opinion has been modeled after a Whole Foods…. basically it has lots of organic foods, high end products, etc. and I came across a display for “Benedetto Cavalieri” pasta (from Lecce.) It was in a real fancy package (that included a ribbon.) It looked good and since I am always one to try new pasta, I bought a pound of the Casarecci…. even though it was $7.99! I cooked it and it was good… not sure if was $7.99 good but I chalked it up to experience. De Cecco is still better:) I guess I got a deal since I just saw some online for $8.60.

Here are a few reasons I think they can justify the high price of this pasta:

  1. They’ve been around since 1918…. if it’s an old company they can charge more.
  2. Apparently they use the “Delicate Method” which is VERY expensive. It costs more to be delicate.
  3. The Blue ribbon on the bag.
  4. I hope you’re not taking me seriously.;)

Wow!! My wallet can’t support eight dollar pasta :( Eight dollar vodka sauce would be another story though…..

Joe, I’m ashamed of you! You, above all people, should have seen straight through that bit of branding.

Holy Cow! That’s some pretty expensive pasta. Better to buy some flour and eggs and make it yourself.

7.99 – sheesh…that’s a lotta dough (no pun intended). But you know what – I bought some fresh pasta for the first time – I made a pasta dish (it’s posted on my blog now) and that was 3.19 and it wasn’t even a full pound of pasta. The dried kind would have been like 1.19 for a pound. For a half pound – 60 cents. So, I paid 3.19 for something that really costs .60. That’s what, like 600% more than what I would have been paying? Crazy, right? The things we do on impulse. LOL

Mine can’t either Robin… it’s all in the name of research:)

I know Sally…. but I had to try it and share it.

You’re right MB… probably taste better too.

I was sucked in Darius… the lights, the ribbon, the delicate method.

It must be Michelle… now if it were Calabrese Pasta, I could understand! Ok, maybe I’m a bit biased:)

Ale, my fidanzato, brings me at least 2 bags of Orecchiette when he comes from Italy because everytime I look for it here in Portland it’s never less than $6.99 for a small bag. I love that stuff so it really puts a dent in my budget.

It’s all about the ribbon Joe, you may have paid 7.99 but somehow that little ol’ ribbon makes it feel like a gift!!

    I hear ya Piccola!

Cook Eat Fret… you can have it.:)

Maryann… It is puuurty…not a bad idea but maybe I’ll buy some cheaper pasta and then buy a bow.

They should have tied a pot and gallon of water to it for 7.99 Amanda!
