Rolling in an Ape

It’s true, I want one.  Some people want a sports car or a motorcycle and of course the SMART car is the hottest trend here in the States but not for me… I want a Piaggio Ape.

  • Never drove an Ape or even rode in one. I LOVED our Smart car we rented in Italy- so I’ll leave the Ape to you Joe!!! Nice pic.

  • How cool is that? You get the Ape, I get a Vespa. Santa, are you listening?

  • Carole in KC

I used to ride in one when I was little and living in Sicily. It’s the only vehicle my father ever drove until we came to the States. Also, I used to get car sick, but not in the Ape. You brought back so many memories.

  • Since your message on my site: “I want to get one and drive it in the States. Think anyone would notice?” I’ve been thinking: “Do it, Joe! And, paint your logo on the side too!”

Must tell you. Daniele enquired about them in a local garage. He said, “I’m looking for an Ape, do you know anyone round here who sells them?” The response was, “Me! How many do you want?” A little further into the conversation, Dan said, “Well it isn’t for me, actually. It’s for my wife.” Aparently the chap gasped and actually staggered backwards in disbelief. All he could do was shake his head and say, “No, no!”

I’m going to get one sooner or later. Not just for the Italian style, but because they’re so easy on gas/petrol. When I do, I might just “girl” it up a bit – sunflowers, curtains, etc. Think anyone would notice?

  • I love the Ape. I keep saying to O that we need to get one. One of these days…

  • After a couple of trips to Italy, my husband totally wants a Smart car! Glad I found your blog through Maryann.

  • Agh! No Joe! You will slow down traffic puttin’ along in that thing!

  • I like the Ape, but I love the 500 !

  • ME TOO! It’s a big goal of mine to have an Ape some day. My gardener takes me for a spin every once in a while and I love it! :)

  • I would love one. But I could not fit my APE-size hubby in it. LOL!

  • My FIL sold his a couple years ago…wish I had known you were in the market ;)

  • Did you ever try the smaller version of the Ape? You shoul.. it has also the stereo!!!

  • I love these …was fascinated by them! I couldn’t get my husband in one either…ha ha

  • I totally love those! -okay I go Ape over them ;)

  • van

That is cool! Also, I am so glad to know that you worked in Bologna, the places I visited in 2000. I like it very much! :)

  • I love your blog, Joe. Especially the image of Italy you provide, nostalgi, truthful, paesana. It makes me think of my Italia when I was a kid. By the way, I have always been a fan of Vespa. With Vespa I have travelled all over Europa many years ago, also with Woman of Roma. We both are Vespa lovers. And of course Ape belongs to the same Piaggio family. Ah ah ah, it could be fun to see you drive in your HUGE and LONG motoways with an APE (been to California one month ago). Send pictures as soon as you can! ;-)

  • thanks for all the greaqt comments… I guess I’m not the only one that loves these very Italian utility/amusement rides! a very Merry Christmas, Happy Christmas/Buon Natale a tutti… may the spirit of Christmas find you all well this year and let’s make 2009 wonderful!

  • Hi Joe I hope you had a nice Christmas.
I like the ape, never road in one.
I know that is the best way to go in those tight roads of Italy.
Prefect in the hills of the Amalfi Coast.
You can hardly fit one car!
Joe, You wanted me to let you know when I added you to my foodie friends link. I have now done that with pleasure, Thanks Chuck

  • Joe, if you want to make longer trip, have a look at http://www.apecamper.it/
