Exploring Calabria

Calabria has more than it’s share of beauty and hidden gems… sometimes it just takes a little exploring to find them.  We took a day trip to Le Castella a few weeks ago to visit it’s beautiful castle, which is one of many in Calabria… ever been? Here’s a taste.  (Click on the photos to enlarge.)

  • I’ve been looking forward to seeing photos of your trip, Joe. These are beautiful :)

  • No, I’ve never been, but am tempted by these photos and by other blogs I read.

Strong Greek influence there? Or am I mistaken?

  • What lovely photos. How lucky for you to be able to have family and travel there. Beautiful scenes. Wish I could be there now. Calabria is such a neglected part of Italy by American tourists. But that’s a double edged sword.

  • Welcome back Joe. It looks like you had a wonderful holiday.. your pictures are just wonderful!

I always wanted to go to this castle and after all my time spent in Calabria, never got the chance. Definitely the next time around. It’s so beautiful! Have you been the castle in Squillace? That one is great as well.

    Thanks Maryann!
    Yes Sally among others.
Thanks Linda… I prefer it remain neglected by tourists. At least a little:)
    Thanks Jady!
You should go Carla. When’s next time?

This makes me wish I could go back to Calabria soon! My husband’s town was Giosia Ionica and my sister-in-law now lives in Siderno.

Just curious –do you have a recipe for the savory fried potato/flour/semolina dough with anchovy in the middle that Calabrians call zeppoles? No one in the family can give it to me …they say come over to watch how they are made and when I get there the dough is already rising. sigh. Same deal with the potato stuffed mini eggplants. I’ve been searching for years fro a written recipe for both!

    Thanks!
