It was exactly the same way in my house! One time when I was a kid I had dinner at my friend's house, and her mom made 1 pound of pasta for 6 of us. My mom was shocked when she heard it. I just saw Vesuvius in the distance on our daily ferry trip back to Naples but didn't go there. I think I didn't want to deal with volcanic ash ruining my walking shoes. I have been to Sakurajima in Japan which is also an active volcano. It erupts every few minutes spitting out a little ash and causing the ground below your feet to rumble and groan.
