Brand Italy –Dunkin Donuts?

If you’ve read some of my past “Brand Italy”posts you know I like to rant about companies that try to be Italian without actually trying to be Italian.  There are a whole list of companies that introduce products using Italian food appeal and then label them Italian…the problem is,it’s not remotely Italian.  Dunkin Donuts recently introduced the “Chicken Parmesan Flatbread Sandwich.”  The description of the sandwich from their website is as follows:

“Get a taste of Italy with premium breaded chicken, melted provolone cheese and tangy marinara sauce.”

Really?  I’ve never had one (and it’s safe to say,I never will) but I highly doubt that anyone will “Get a taste of Italy”when they try one.{for the record,I’m not saying the product doesn’t taste good…it might and it’s probably a great product for DD}  What do you think?

Here’s a more realistic photo of a Chicken Parmesan Flatbread Sandwich compliments of the guys over at We Rate Stuff. (Click on the link for their unbiased review on the sandwich)

**To make matters worse (much worse) I heard a commercial for the Chicken Parm Flatbread Sandwich a few weeks ago.  The commercial revolved around an Italian American “tough guy”with an accent making threats to someone to try the sandwich.  I tried to find it online but couldn’t.  I haven’t heard it since but I’m hoping that the Ad Agency or Brand Manager at DD smartened up and pulled it.

Guess you didn’t serve these at your wedding, then? (How did that go? Any photos, stories???)

  • Small wonder that people in the Midwest have no idea what Italian food is!

  • Hi Sally.. NO,NO. I haven’t seen any photos yet to be honest. I’ll post a few when I get some.

The thing is Claudia,DD is from Boston!

  • I agree! My biggest rant is going to the deli counter at my local grocery store and trying to buy Italian salamis or cheeses. They don’t even taste remotely like the genuine article, especially parmesan cheese.

  • What do I think? How can I think when I have been assaulted with that inedible looking nasty sandwich? No part of it looks like the food it claims to be! And no Italian could eat that,so I am relieved to hear you didn’t try.
I’ve just returned from a foodie trip to Puglia and this is just too painful to watch after that!

  • There’s nothing about that sandwich that could even remotely “taste like Italy”. And like you said maybe it is good but I don’t want to find out. I’ll stick with the real thing!

  • I am choking on my coffee, that’s what I think. Ma che c****!

  • It’s an uphill battle Mirella.

Judith.. it is painful isn’t it? I’m ok with them selling it…it’s the “get a taste of Italy”that kills me!

    I’m with you Food Hunter!

If you’re choking now Rowena…imagine what would happen if you tried one!:)
