Well, last week my father found a great deal on tomatoes from a produce retailer in Hartford (a fellow Calabrese may I add) 25lb of tomatoes for $5…and we didn’t have to pick them! So we filled up the car and saved the year. Nice save dad! Result –96 jars. There’s nothing better than fresh homemade tomato sauce! Here’s more on how we do it.

We had tomatoes till a few days ago (amazing for MN). And then the snow hit. I am a lazy canner (I free whole tomatoes and freeze puree.) So my hat goes off to you and the wonderful, earthy Italian process of preserving this most beloved fruit.
I’m happy to report we had a great tomato year. We have processed almost 300lbs of tomatoes so far and they are still producing in our hoophouse despite night time temperatures in the 30′s. We bought one of those sauce makers like you showed which has really lightened the load.
Thanks Claudia…I noticed the snow! too early!
Don.. I’m jealous. I guess you can’t have a great tomato season every year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for next year already.
