What’s the difference between a Ristorante a Trattoria and an Osteria? In the past the differences were more pronounced but here’s a quick breakdown.
Osteria – it used to be an Inn where travelers could eat, drink and lodge for the night. An osteria today is a modest place to get food and drink. Osterias often sell local wine.
Trattoria – Is a casual ristorante and generally less expensive. Trattorias are often family run and serve local and seasonal dishes.
Ristorante – Is more formal, better service and in general more expensive.
